Application Guidelines

Timeline of Application for August Selection Process (for enrollment in April 2025 admission)

  • Assessment of Eligibility for Application: by July 3rd, 2024
  • Application Period: July 9th – July 22nd, 2024
  • Examination: August 26th – August 28th, 2024
  • Announcement of Admission Results: September 12th, 2024

Timeline of Application for January-February Selection Process (for enrollment in April or October 2025 admission)

  • Assessment of Eligibility for Application: by November 26th, 2024
  • Application Period: December 2nd – December 12th, 2024
  • Examination: January 28th – January 31st, 2025
  • Announcement of Admission Results: February 14th, 2025

Eligibility for Application (Master’s program)

  • Individuals who have graduated or who will graduate from a Japanese four-year university by the entrance
  • Individuals who have earned or will earn a bachelor’s degree in Japan by the entrance
  • Individuals who have graduated from a university outside Japan that implements 16 or more years of school curriculum up to university graduation, and earned a bachelor’s degree
  • Individuals who are expecting to graduate from a university described above, and earn a bachelor’s degree by the entrance
  • Individuals who have obtained or are obtaining relevant qualifications as specified by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  • Others (Eligibility Screening is Required. Please ask the T-LSI office (life-innov [at] un.tsukuba.ac.jp; change [at] to “@”) for details.)

  • The venue and gathering time will be announced by e-mail.
  • Applicants who are late for the gathering time may lose their qualifications.

Announcement of Acceptance

  • The examinee numbers of successful applicants will be posted on the University’s graduate admissions website (https://entry.ap-graduate.tsukuba.ac.jp).

Japanese Government Scholarship

Graduate School Non-degree Research Students (Kenkyusei)

*Level B2 of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is required.
When English is the first language of the applicants, the submission of either of the English scores is not required.

Admission Policy

Master’s Program

We seek students who are highly motivated and open to taking up new challenges in the specialized fields. To be admitted into the program, students should be able to demonstrate their research expertise, knowledge, and innovative potential in the specialized field of interest. In addition, studentʼs English language ability to communicate, acquire advanced practical skills, and publish scientific innovations are welcomed.

(Admission Criteria)

  • Document review will assess whether you have the bachelor-level knowledge necessary to study in this degree program and whether you have the ability to explain the research background and prospects in English.
  • The English proficiency test will be used to assess whether you have the English proficiency (B2 or higher according to CEFR standards) required for studying in this degree program.
  • The oral examination will evaluate your creativity and willingness to welcome innovative thoughts in your specialized field and your ability to explain and discuss in English.

Doctoral Program
We seek students who are highly motivated and open to taking up new challenges in the specialized fields. To be admitted into the program, students should have their
research expertise, knowledge, and innovative potential in the specialized field of interest. In addition, the students need English language ability to communicate, acquire advanced practical skills, and publish scientific innovations.

(Admission Criteria)

  • The evaluation committee will assess whether you have a master’s level expertise (excellent grades in the enrolled course), ability to explain the research background, research plan, and contribution to society of research results in English.
  • The English proficiency test will be used to assess whether you have the English proficiency (B2 or higher according to CEFR standards) required for conducting research activities in this degree program.** TOEFL-PBT or iBT Examineeʼs Score Record with photo identification, or IELTS (Academic Module) Official Test Report Form with photo identification of either of the examinations you took in the past two years.
  • The oral examination will evaluate innovative potential and the willingness to achieve novelty in specialized fields.
