Master's/Doctoral Program in Life Science Innovation is a new degree program jointly established with the Life Science Promotion Association of Tsukuba

Program Objectives

Innovation based on life science requires an interdisciplinary approach towards the sustainable use of resources as well as their conservation and commercialization. The foundation of this process are excellent communication and management skills, being able to identify key issues, and finding and implementing innovative solutions to problems based on advanced knowledge and skills. Individuals who obtain such transferable skills can actively engage in the global business field in Medical care, Pharmaceutical, Food and Environmental industries.

The T-LSI program consists of two-year master course and three-year Ph.D. course. Students who successfully passed the final review will receive their degrees as follows:

Our goal is to develop advanced professionals that acquire the cross-sectoral and comprehensive way of thinking and the world-class advanced professional research capabilities, open up new progress in the life sciences research using bioresources and are globally active in the research and development of innovative pharmaceuticals / functional foods and in the field of their conservation and management.

Diploma Policy

The degrees including Master of Disease Mechanism, Master of Medical Science, Master of Food Innovation and Master of Environmental Management will be conferred to the ones who meet the necessary conditions in Graduate School Regulations of University of Tsukuba (the number of credits of class subjects and research guidance), achieve research results suitable for master’s degree in the following courses including Disease Mechanism, Drug Discovery, Food Innovation and Environmental Management, respectively, submit a thesis or report on specific subject research, and are certified by the final examination that they possess the following abilities. Ones who wish to proceed to the Doctor program subsequently can submit a document on qualifying examination as substitution of master thesis.

  1. Basic specialized knowledge of comprehensive field of life science innovation that cross-cut Disease Mechanism, Drug Discovery, Food Innovation and Environmental Management
  2. Specialized knowledge of one of the following fields: Disease Mechanism, Drug Discovery, Food Innovation and Environmental Management
  3. The ability to collaborate with researchers outside of one's area of expertise
  4. English communication skills that work in the international community
  5. Capacity to perform research to understand the social needs, set and solve the problems

Process of the course

Master's Program

Before the entrance exam
  • Students must first contact the office of Ph.D. Program in Life Science Innovation about faculty members they wish to study with and then contact the faculty members
  • Write names of faculty members of your choice onto the application form
First year in master program
  • Entering the course that the faculty member of your choice belongs to
  • Determination of mentor faculty
  • Performing research activity in each laboratory
  • Submission of research proposal
Second year in master program
  • Mid-term presentation
  • Submission of master thesis or report on specific subject research
  • Students who wish to proceed to the Doctor program subsequently can submit a document on qualifying examination as substitution of master thesis
  • Final examination
  • The conferment of degree


Acquisition of credits necessary for program completion in 2 years
  • Basic subjects: 13 subjects and 14 credits from the common basic subjects
  • Specialized subjects (elective): 3-5 subjects and 5 credits from their own course
  • Specialized subjects (required): 5 subjects and 12-13 credits
  • Graduate General Education Courses: 1-3 subjects and 3 credits from 3 prescribed courses

  • Graduate students achieves poster or oral presentation at least once at international academic meeting
  • Graduate students achieves publication of at least one peer-reviewed paper written in English as first author
